In ‘Sandra Bridie b. 19–, Eight Fictions’, I present eight fictional artists who bear my own name, but with different birthdates, imagined into the Melbourne art landscape of the 20th and 21st centuries. These artists are presented through interviews followed by documentation of their artworks.

The artists range in age and ability from emerging artists to a grand dame of Melbourne abstract art. By presenting often tragi-comic characters who have to deal with good fortune, destiny, disaster, boredom, malaise, envy, distractions and lack of faith, my hope is to present the artist as a recognisable creature in a familiar locale or milieu.

Introduction by Michael Graf and design by Yanni Florence.

Publications are a large component of my artistic practice, and since 1988 my individual fictional artists have been presented in small edition publications alongside the art work in exhibitions. To collate 8 fictions into one publication allows a reading across one aspect of my practice and makes sense of the larger practice of creating fictional artists.

This book has been a dream project of mine and to have Yanni Florence design the work has been a quiet aspiration I have long held as I have admired his design and publication projects since the 1990s with his fabulous Pataphysics.

‘Sandra Bridie, b.19–. Eight Fictions’ is a small edition of 200 copies. The publication is 200 pages printed on laid paper with over 40 pages of colour and black and white reproductions of art works. Printed by Complete Colour, Melbourne.
